Applications for key security and asset management are limited only by one’s imagination. In any situation where there is a need to control access to keys or other small valuables, a key security system can be deployed. One of the most common and practical implementations though is in the automotive industry.
In a recent posting, we offered some guidelines for help in selecting a key control system. Taking that train of thought further down the line, a key security system should be designed to ensure that asset protection goals are achieved. Best practices on the front end of the decision help to ensure you get the most from your system.
A systems approach to physical security offers many benefits to the user, including solutions that offer greater functionality, improved cost effectiveness and added modularity. For example, the integration of video surveillance with access control systems is fast becoming an industry norm and this kind of collaboration has helped to establish a de facto standard for integration implementations. Vendors, system integrators and end users have learned that by opening protocols to a wide range of integration partners, it is possible to implement connectivity across systems on any level.
Selecting a key control system, like many other physical security system purchase decisions, starts with determining what problems need to be solved and how a particular solution can meet your needs. By going through this exercise, you can custom-design a key control system with the exact features to address any challenges and/or resolve any issues.
It’s never too late – or too early – to implement a key control and management strategy as part of an organization’s overall physical security operation. A good key control and management system is organized and formal and addresses both access to and control of the facilities’ keys.
